The Strong Stance: The State of Queer Public Health

With the recent House passing of the American Health Care Act (AHCA), the state of queer public health is even more unsure and in danger. Part of what AHCA does, and what has caused the loudest outrage, is make it more difficult for folks with pre-existing conditions to get and keep adequate and affordable health insurance, and by extension, healthcare. A few items that have been listed as pre-existing conditions by the Kaiser Family Foundation include AIDS, HIV, “sexual deviation or disorder”, and transexualism. Obviously these particular ones disproportionately affect the queer and trans communities, in addition to all the normal health concerns that anyone else has. On this episode I am joined by two special guests to discuss queer public health and their new podcast, aptly named ‘The Queer Public Health Podcast’: Tiffany Mott-Smith and Kris Oseth.

On this Spotlight episode, I spoke to Avre' Vickers about his new venture, Lost Boys United (LBU). But what started as a conversation about his company and their products became more about the man behind it and how he is giving back to trans folks, as well as the youth in his community. Join me as I speak to Avre' about his life, his path starting this business, and his love for the youth basketball players he coaches.

A lot has happened in the country, in the trans community, and in my own personal life in the last 5 weeks. The bulk of it has left me very angry and broken. Join me on this episode of The Strong Stance, as I discuss the events of the past month, including the Transgender Day of Remembrance, the election and its aftermath, my recent move and the toll that it’s all taken.

The Strong Stance: Adjusting to Southern Intersections

Moving to any new environment always means adjustment: Taking a new job, starting a new family, moving to a new city. With each of these shifts often comes a new culture and a new social circle. And while building that circle can be at least somewhat difficult for most people, it’s particularly more onerous if you belong to a community that is not widely accepted or even understood. Combine that with any other minority status and the intersectionality of those identities can compound those adjustments. And what if that new culture is one that tends to be significantly more conservative? Tonight we have two guests that have recently made moves from larger cities in the North and Midwest to the Deep South state of Georgia and we are going to talk to them about their experience of ‘Adjusting to Southern Intersections’.

The Strong Stance Spotlight: Benny's June

The month of June was particularly eventful for a lot of the queer community: Philadelphia Trans Health Conference, Pride, the Pulse shooting in Orlando and more...and clearly not all of it was positive. These events affected people in different ways and, in the case of Benny Rodriguez, they weren’t the only events that made June emotionally taxing. So we sat down for a chat about...Benny’s June.

We discussed the Latinx community, the anti-blackness found at many of the aforementioned events, and the erasure that was so blatantly evident in the wake of tragedy.

The Strong Stance: Bathroom Bill Breakdown

In the last several weeks, both the state of North Carolina and the city of Oxford, Alabama have passed legislation limiting or prohibiting the trans community from utilizing the public facilities of their correct gender. These bills are HB2 in North Carolina and City Ordinance 2016-18 in Oxford. Join me as I breakdown some of the points, counterpoints and realities of these bills and the harm they inflict on the trans community, as well as the complete lack of protection that they provide to the people who claim they are needed.

The Strong Stance Stories: About Face

This show is a special one because this show marks the beginning of a new flavor of The Strong Stance: Storytelling. I’m calling today’s show ‘About Face’. These stories showcase a few of the ways in which we present ourselves to the world around us and how those performances and presentations affect our lives moving forward. Is the face that we show to the world the same one we see in the mirror? How do we view society and how are we viewed in it? And will these experiences change the trajectory of our future and how we move through our daily lives? Welcome...to The Strong Stance Stories.

The Strong Stance: The Injustice of Incarceration

In the last few years, there has been ever increasing media attention on the subject of incarceration, particularly in how those institutions affect transgender inmates. From CeCe McDonald’s imprisonment for defending herself in an assault, to Laverne Cox’s portrayal as Sophia Burset in Orange Is the New Black, to Jennicet Gutierrez’s White House protest of transgender detainee treatment in ICE custody. Today we have two guests joining us to discuss the current state of the American prison system, the concept of abolition and the reforms necessary to protect transgender and gender non-conforming prisoners.

    The Rampant Murders of Transwomen

For all the advancements that the transgender community has seen over the last couple years, there are still staggering statistics of discrimination and oppression that our community faces on a daily basis. We face employment and housing discrimination, the outright denial of adequate healthcare or the coverage thereof, bullying, suicide and murder at alarming rates.

The Strong Stance: The Trans-lation of Marriage Equality

A month ago The Supreme Court of the United States ruled that same-sex marriage is now legal nationwide. NPR’s Nina Totenberg said that this case, Obergefell (OH-ber-guh-fell) v. Hodges is a landmark ruling that is “right up there with Brown v. Board of Education, and Roe v. Wade.” Facebook exploded with rainbow flags and the White House was lit up in rainbow spotlights; and people celebrated in the streets, in their homes and at events. But how does this decision affect the transgender and gender non-conforming community? How big IS this win for us? And obviously there is still work to be done, so where do we go from here? On this episode of The Strong Stance, we have two guests that will unpack this decision and discuss the questions and work that remains. So join us as we engage in a ‘Trans-lation of Marriage Equality’.

The Strong Stance: The Problem with Passing

So many trans folks, especially early in transition, are obsessed with "passing": posting pics on social media, asking for others opinions, reading blogs on behavior, dress, and actions. Often this status is seen as important not only for safety but also so that the outside world sees you as who you truly are. But how does "passing" negatively affect our community? Tonight join me and guest co-host Jaan Williams as we break down the definition of the word and the concept of "passing" and Passing Privilege.

The Strong Stance: Is the T Transitioning Out of LGBT?

When it comes to the referring to larger “gay” or “queer” community (and I’m using air quotes here), most people and organizations have settled on the acronym LGBT, or Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender. While each of these individuals are not identical, nor do they sometimes even share some of the same characteristics, they have found themselves grouped together as one collective community. But why is that? And what are the benefits of the collective versus the individual, or rather the collective and the splintering off of one particular segment of that community? There is an ongoing debate as to whether transgender people really belong in the same category as the rest of the community. So tonight we are going to discuss that. Does the T truly fit in the acronym and why...or is the T transitioning out of LGBT?

The Strong Stance Trans Spotlight: Tracee McDaniel

Lately most of the news of trans people has been negative. Murders, violence, harmful and ignorant legislation… It is often hard to remember the great things that members of our community are doing in spite of all of this. So tonight we are going to focus on a member of our community that is not only surviving, but thriving and is helping other transgender and gender non-conforming people to do the same: the Founder and CEO of the Juxtaposed Center for Transformation in Atlanta, Tracee McDaniel.

The Strong Stance: The Trans Sexual Experience

Trigger Warning: We will be talking about our personal experiences tonight and as with most topics on this show, we’re not always certain what roads this conversation might lead down. We’re going to do our best to keep this PG-13, but we want to warn folks that if someone feels compelled to share a negative experience, we are certainly not going to squelch that.

Very often trans people are reduced. They are reduced to their names, their pronouns, their parts and their surgeries. Trans people are constantly subject to inappropriate questions, assumptions and stereotypes about any number of experiences in their lives: not least of which are our sexual experiences. Being constantly surrounded by those speculations and expectations can and often do invariably affect how trans and gender non-conforming people view themselves in the context of what is being touted as the norm. So tonight we’re going to talk about that. We’re going to talk about those experiences and societal assumptions and what impact they have played on trans lives.

    Speaking Out on Sexual Assault

RE-BROADCAST -- PREVIOUSLY AIRED MAY 2014 Recently, Phyllis Schlafly appallingly implied that the reason sexual assault on college campuses is increasing is because too many women are now attending college. (1) Dangerous statements like these as well as more positive campaigns like No More (2)  tend to reinvigorate the very important conversation around sexual assault. One group of survivors that are often left out of this discussion is the trans* community. On this episode of The Strong Stance we will speak to Nicole Armstead and Christa Heilman from the Network for Victim Recovery of D.C. about the resources for survivors of sexual assault in the DC area and the unique experiences of those that are trans* and gender non-conforming. http://www.salon.com/2015/01/06/phyllis_schlafly_campus_sex_assault_is_on_the_rise_because_too_many_women_go_to_college http://nomore.org

The Ugly Truth About Your Homeowner's Insurance

Insurance fraud occurs when someone knowingly lies to obtain some benefit or advantage that they are not entitled to. The insurance company itself might commit insurance fraud by selling bad insurance policies or failing to pay valid claims. Mail Fraud is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 1341. This makes it a Federal crime or offense for anyone to use the United States mail in carrying out a scheme to defraud. The two teaching tips that I want you to take away today are (1) don’t go back and forth with your insurance company if their payout is ridiculously below industry standards low (like $3.19sq ft for Berber Carpet installed) just file a claim against your insurance company with the state insurance commissioner. Let the insurance company explain their logic to the insurance commissioner; and, (2) get a certified copy of your full policy. The renewal paperwork that the insurance company sends out to you when you renew your policy is simply the new forms and endorsements that have changed or been updated. This is not your full certified policy.    Please donate to our GoFund Me Fire and Water fundraiser that was created to help my family by two of our incredible podcast supporters: http://www.gofundme.com/kazwtw If you are thinking of remodeling your home, please support these incredible businesses who have stepped up to help get my family back on our feet! The Ugly Truth About Your Homeowners and Title Insurance

On Friday, January 9, 2015, I experienced every homeowner's worst nightmare--my upstairs bathroom had a blockage in the plumbing line that created a backup and spilled into the ceiling. This started an electrical fire.  When I got the call, my only focus was on my family and making sure they got out safely.   Then, I did what I have always been taught to do.  My first call was to my home owner's insurance claim center.  I mean, that is why I paid over $1700 per year in premiums for the last 7 years right?   Things went from bad to worse as the water damage restoration work began.  Honestly, I never planned on making a podcast about my experience but as this began to unfold like a bad horror movie. So I'm going to use my Community Connections podcast to document my experience and if you would like to support my family in getting back to normal, please help to spread the word about the GoFundMe page that two of our awesome podcast listeners created for us: http://www.gofundme.com/kazwtw Too bad I didn't read this May 2014 Consumer Report before now...http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/magazine/2014/05/how-to-get-your-homeowners-insurance-claim-paid/index.htm#

    Transforming Yourself with Jody Rose

Are you ready to change? The first episode of Transforming Yourself, a radio show about you, explores what it means to make the positive choice to change your life.  In this episode, some of the things you'll learn include how to think about risk as something that could happen, but that didn’t happen, and how to move through fear successfully by first identifying what it is you're afraid of.  You'll also learn how to listen to your intuition, and why positively adapting to change means not seeing things as "good" or "bad."  The stories and exercises give you the option to write things down about your life, because when you write things down, they become real.  Find out more about Jody Rose Helfand, MA, MFA, author, professor, and keynote speaker at www.jodyrosehelfand.com and www.transformingyourself.com

Relationship Politics: Race and Gender Identity in Dating

America has always been called the "melting pot" but the past few years, that melting pot has reached a boil and if you have been on social media, you've seen all of the hashtags. Even the Huffington Post recently decided to release an article on the topic of race and dating (http://huff.to/1AcI9ty). There has been a lot of dialogue about the issue of race and its impact in all facets of life.  On this episode of The Strong Stance, we will open the dialogue on gender, race and interracial dating because the reality is that we aren't as progressive as we like to think we are.  The reality is that race and gender do play critical roles in our relationships and how outsiders view those connections--more than we admit in public, polite society.  Tune into this show as we talk about the reality and the misconceptions of interracial dating. In what ways do race and gender identity play a role in who we have romantic relationships with? Is the personal really political? And for all the prejudice and expectations that are heaped on couples that come from different backgrounds, is that hardship lessened in the LGBTQ community, or is it just more of the same?

When I left GA on Dec 11, I knew my life was about to change in ways that I couldn’t describe but I had no idea that my ordinary life was about to become incredible.  Let’s talk about some of the people and businesses that really made this trip amazing.  First, we have to say a huge thank you to our big sister, Danna Ingram Kirk.  She has been an incredible hostess.  I mean this woman has allowed us to not only stay in her home but she also allowed us to take over her kitchen, perform weddings in her living room, build gingerbread houses in her family room, and she coordinated our entire wedding.  That’s right….WE GOT MARRIED on December 13, 2014!!  Links that we mentioned in this episode:  Our Wedding:  OKC County Clerk: (http://countyclerk.oklahomacounty.org/ Al’s Formal Wear (Store 722): http://www.alsformalwear.com/ Historic Cimmarron Alliance in OKC http://www.equalityokc.org/ Nothing But Bundts http://www.nothingbundtcakes.com/bakery/ok/oklahoma-city Catfish Cove Where we stayed: Sheraton Four Points Quail Springs OKC http://www.starwoodhotels.com/fourpoints/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=3229 Morning After Brunch The Boom http://www.theboomokc.com/Specials.html Favorite Restaurants in OKC Joey’s Café (http://joeyscafeok.com/) was a hidden jewel (and a MUST EAT).   First Watch (http://www.firstwatch.com) at Quail Springs Marketplace – the service was incredible, food was delicious, but skip the water—it’s salty.  On The Border OKC (http://www.ontheborder.com/locate/oklahoma-city-ok)… (be sure to bring a designated driver…LOL).   Cous Cous Café (http://couscouscafeokc.com/) Favorite Nightlife in OKC  Then the nightlife…hearing Tim Mitchell of the Tim Mitchell Band (http://www.timmitchellband.com/)play at The Friends Bar and Grill (http://www.yelp.com/biz/friends-restaurant-and-club-oklahoma-city) was such a treat!! You can buy his music on Amazon (http://amzn.to/1wxoHQO)

The Strong Stance: Transitioning the Small Town South

It’s no secret that living as trans can be a challenge. That is particularly true in the small towns of the deep south. There is a massive amount of evidence that successfully transitioning, however one might define that, is monumentally easier with access to resources and a healthy support system. That also holds true after one has “completed” their transition, also however one might define that. It’s also no surprise that, considering the law of averages, that the smaller the town, the fewer resources are available. Throw in the degree to which a town is considered to be conservative or liberal and a trans person may be left with little to no resources or community in a place where they are subject to ignorance, misunderstanding, discrimination and even violence. But there are people out there changing those environments and tonight we will talk to two such individuals. They are fighting to expand the rights of trans* and gender variant people. They are changing what it means to be queer in the south and what resources are available to those in the community. They are Transitioning the Small Town South.

Em is the Field Organizer for Georgia Equality, a political advocacy non-profit that seeks to advance fairness, safety and opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Georgians.

Liam Mitchum is a transman who is currently a student at GMC. Liam created and leads his own trans advocacy group called Wake Up Augusta in the town where he grew up, Augusta, Georgia.

    Teko's Corner:

Summary: In today’s society we are overly focused on others' perception of who we should love and what that love should look like.  We too often fall into stereotypes and are then guided by the how others perceive us instead of who we really want.  Some say that as we grow that this is no longer an issue; and, this raises the question--are we truly free to love who we want without any judgment?  Can we be truly happy knowing we will be looked upon as weird and unethical? Tune in as we take it to the corner...Teko's Corner!

Love Knows No Distance: The Art of Compromise

Love Knows No Distance LGBT Long Distance Relationships I'm Annise--a 40 year old lesbian and mother of two.  My partner's name is Benny; and, she is the mother of three.  Together, we have five children from ages 10 to 29.  Love knows no distance is our story of how we fell in love and how we work to maintain our love even though we live hundreds of miles away.  We decided to start this podcast after Create Love featured us as their Happy Couple in August (http://createloveforwomen.blogspot.com/2014/08/happy-couple-highlight-annise-and-benny.html) and after we created a Facebook group to support other LGBTQ couples in long distance relationships.  This podcast is very different from the most of the podcasts on the Back2Us Network.  Love Knows No Distance is unscripted and for the most part--unedited.  What comes to our mind comes out our mouth.  Our topic for this episode is Compromise.  Originally, we were going to discuss our excitement over the Oct 6 court decision that struck down the same sex marriage ban in Oklahoma; but, when you are unscripted...what comes up comes out!  This episode is sponsored by wehavebeenwaiting.com and features by Mhyst "You're into Me" as well as Castlebuyer "As I Love You".

    The Strong Stance: Transgender Wellness

Access to health care has lately been a hotly debated topic, both inside and outside of the transgender and genderqueer community. What’s covered, what’s not, who is covered and who is not. It’s a discussion that cuts across class, race, sex, and gender identity. Now, with the Affordable Care Act, there is even more debate and discussion. A good number of these decisions particularly affect the trans* community. Tonight,  Danielle Askini - Policy Director at Basic Rights Oregon, will join us to discuss the current climate of health care as it relates to the trans* and queer community and the access and/or hurdles to competent and comprehensive care. Danielle joined Basic Rights Oregon from Seattle, Washington where she was the founding executive director of Gender Justice League – a Trans* Activist Collective where she worked to repeal Trans Health Insurance exclusions in Washington, launch Trans* Pride Seattle – the largest Trans* event in the Pacific Northwest, and mobilizing to include Trans people in HIV Prevention and testing efforts in Washington State.

    Community Connections: Against the Grain

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month; and, here on Back2Us Radio, domestic violence (or as some call it “Intimate Partner Abuse”) is always on our radar.  There has been a lot of public outcry in news about domestic violence and NFL players; but, there is almost zero public outcry for law enforcement spouses who are victims of domestic violence.  In fact, when a reporter was working on a story about domestic violence in law enforcement was shocked to learn that there had not been any studies done on this since the early 1990s.   In 2013, an article in the New York Times reported  "In many departments, an officer will automatically be fired for a positive marijuana test, but can stay on the job after abusing or battering a spouse…” and this same investigation also revealed “nearly 30 percent of the officers accused of domestic violence were still working in the same agency a year later, compared with 1 percent of those who failed drug tests and 7 percent of those accused of theft." Today, Deputy Patricia Lundy, who was one of the first female deputies to patrol in Sumter County GA is going to join us to talk about her fight to enter a male dominated profession and her newly formed non-profit organization Moving Forward Ministries that is dedicated to working with law enforcement spouses who are victims of abuse.  I mean, who do you call when your abuser is the police?  Tune in to this show! The Pink Promise

Tune in as Dr. Annise Mabry and best selling Author Sharon D. Smith talk about the Pink Promise, Breast Cancer Awareness, and community resources for not only Cancer Heros but also their support systems.  "Today marks the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It's a time when we celebrate all of our Cancer Heroes and the fight to end this disease. I get excited about this time of year because it gives me a chance to fulfill the many promises I made to my wife, LaShundria Dansby Smith, just before she died in 2012 from an aggressive form of breast cancer. I have not failed on any of those promises and I don't intend to. You don't know the strength and courage it takes to travel this journey unless you've been through it yourself. You don't know what people are going through behind the smiles. This month, I encourage you to reach out to your friends, family, coworkers, etc and talk with them about breast cancer. Know your risks and get your mammograms done. If you need information, inbox me. Love up on somebody who may be going through therapy right now and celebrate those who are in remission. We have to let breast cancer know we don't fight fair! With all of our resources, research, and progress made in the last 10 years, we're slowly kicking breast cancer in the azz! You can join the fight, too. Every day, I will tell you how." (Sharon D. Smith, Facebook Status Post, Oct 1, 2014)

The Strong Stance Spotlight: Life's Transitions with guest Nicholas Durand

As trans* and gender queer people we often become so focused on our social, mental and physical transitions that they grow to be larger than life. So much so that we forget that a transition is just another word for a shift. A shift in thinking, a shift in geography, a shift in expectations, a shift in marital status or family size. They all affect us as human beings and they are yet another layer to our complex lives as trans*, gender queer, and queer people. And when we forget, it makes it that much easier for people outside our community to see us as just the sum of our surgeries. Tonight's guest will be Nicholas Durand.  Nicholas is 27 years old, and was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in early 2013.  A gay trans man living in Virginia, he is now the facilitator of DCATS and is an advocate for both LGBTQ+ and disability rights. This show is sponsored by Audible.com (http://audiblepodcast.com/back2us). Love Knows No Distance

Love Knows No Distance LGBT Long Distance Relationships When I met her, I would often joke that I still had battle scars from my last relationship.  Actually, she had been my Facebook friend though my last relationship--she watched me find love, fall in love, and then she saw the fall out of that love as it spewed all over my friends' newsfeeds and their Facebook walls that August morning in 2012.  She was simply comforting to me when I needed comfort the most--she was the voice of calm and reassurance that I would hear when I went to hang out in the A Gurlz Guide Facebook Group.  I started reading her blogs; and, well, she started following my status updates and Bitstrips.  I'm Annise--a 40 year old lesbian and mother of two. So tune in each month for a new episode of our life and eventually we will begin featuring other couples from our Facebook group.   This episode is sponsored by lezmysterybox.com Music featured on this episode is by Mhyst "You're into Me" and Fast Funghi "Thankful".

    Back2UsShow_Make Me Normal

Mitch McCabe is a Brooklyn-based documentary filmmaker who has been making films for over 15 years. Her newest project, Make Me Normal is not only a labor of love but covers a topic very dear to our hearts on Back2Us Radio. MAKE ME NORMAL, explores the rise in diagnosis of mental disorders and the boom of psychiatric prescription drugs, all set against the release of the new controversial psychiatric guidelines of the DSM (nicknamed the “Psychiatry Bible”).  With 1 in 3 Americans diagnosed with a mental disorder and 20% (and rising) on prescription drugs, the film asks, what happened to normal? This documentary covers a timely subject matter that affects us all! Since July 2012, Mitch has traveled thousands of miles across America, filming the stories of regular Americans, families, key experts in the psychiatry field, wellness gurus and mental health policy makers. She's shot 70 hours of footage (and counting!). The Make Me Normal project is in the last 8 days of their fundraising campaign.  They have raised $13, 700 of their $50, 000 goal.  Every dollar counts; and, no amount is too small.  Mental illness impacts all of us--whether we realize it or not. Please donate (http://bitly/igg/Make)  today to give a voice to those who struggle daily with finding their normal.   We are going there!! Back2UsShow_Lesbians After Marriage (LAM)

Jennifer Baumgardner, in the September 2007 edition of The Advocate magazine created awareness for a not-so-new-phenomen women who were once married with kids but leave their marriages for a woman after their children become more independent.  These women, knows as Lesbians After Marriage or LAM are defined as " the women who have tied the knot, procreated, and, once the children are out of the home or more independent, found love in the arms of a woman." Coming out is hard; but, coming out after marriage (or for many while still married) brings a whole new set of challenges.  This Sunday, is "kitchen table topic ".  We are going to give our listeners an opportunity to "sit" with us as talk about our experiences as either being a LAM or dating a LAM or choosing not to date a LAM. For many LAMs, this decision costs them more than they  could ever imagine.  So why do women who are lesbians get married to men in the first place?  And what about those women who choose to live a heterosexual life during the week but on the weekend, they become a "weekend lesbian". We will feature music by the talented Tabetha Durham.  Recorded with the bands Shallow Water  and the Forrest McDonald Blues.  She recently sang with Frisky Monkey ..on their latest CD "Involved but not Committed". Join us Sunday as we once again go live and get real!

Back2UsShow_Quarterly Reflections with Doc and Sharon

So it's been a long time since it was just the two of us...with only a mic between us and our listeners.  What an amazing week this has been as Back2Us Radio launched its first full week of scheduling! I spent the majority of last night crying as the realization of what we had accomplished began to sink in.  Give away that what you need the most...when a friend said that to me last year, I was literally sitting on the floor of my guest bathroom and my life was disintegrating before my eyes. I remember thinking "What do I need the most?"  My brain began responding with one word answers like SUPPORT, UNDERSTANDING, UNCONDITIONAL LOVE, ACCEPTANCE, HEALING, SISTERHOOD...give away that what you need the most.  Listen in tonight as Sharon and I are going to talk honestly about our struggle, our hopes, and how we feel watching something we started become a movement that is bringing healing in our community.

    Back2UsShow_Educational Advocacy 101 for Parents

It's that time of year when everyone is on the hunt for the school supply list, the teacher wish list; and, that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle backpack that Target had online but can't locate in the store (oh wait, that's MY challenge at the moment).  Seriously, this time of year for many is filled with excitement but for children who learn differently and their parents--there is often very little to be excited about as the fights about homework resume.   According to a 2010 report from the National Center for Learning Disabilities, nearly 2.4 million students are diagnoised with LD and receive special education services in schools.   For parents trying to navigate this educational maze to obtain help for their child, it  is often described as the equivilent of attempting to climb Mt. Everest in flipflops.   What do you need to know to advocate effectively for your child? What is an IEP?  Who is eligible for a 504 plan? Is there really a difference between a 504 Plan and an IEP? What are the first steps in the IEP process? Does it really speed up the process to get your child tested outside of the school system? What are some types of things you as a parent or guardian can ask to have included in the IEP?  We're going to cover all of this and more!  If you have a child that you believe may need extra help in school to thrive then this show is for you!  We will have Licensed Psychologist Dr. Arcella Trimble as our guest to help navigate the waters on Educational Advocacy 101 for Parents and Guardians.

On August 13, 2013, California Gov. Jerry Brown signed a controversial bill into law that allows the state's transgender public school students to choose which bathroom they want to use and if they want to participate in boys or girls sports.  Massachusetts, Connecticut, Washington and Colorado have all adopted policies designed to protect transgendered pupils; but, California is the first state to write a law.   What happened in California is great; but, the reality is we need more...more awarenes, more advocacy, more support for each other.   Tune in as we talk one on one with Neo Sandja, CEO of FTM Fitness World; Eli Strong, star of the National Geographic series American Transgender; and, the voice the TransGriot blog, Monica Roberts about their journey.  We will also talk with ground breaking director Teresa Dowell Vest and leading actor Tajir Hawkins on his role in the upcoming movie Shirts vs. Skins as well as feature music by The Sexual Side Effects.

    Back2UsShow_Dating with a Disability

Dating in general is difficult; but, dating with a disability is daunting at times to say the least.  In 2011, I found myself back on the dating circuit after being married for 14 years.  Not only was the entire dating scene different but I was different--this time I was dating after being diagnoised with Chronic Inflammatory Demylinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP). I was dating without the ability to define who I was by the work I did because my illness had taken that away from me.  I mean, think about it, the first or second question that we usually ask after meeting someone is “what type of work do you do?” So I found myself emotionally naked.  I was once told by a potential girlfriend that my limited mobility on some days was simply "too much work and took too much preplanning".  Yes, you do have to think a little more about the accessibility of venues when you date someone with a disability.   Alanna Higginson, in her Aug 06, 2013 Op-Ed piece in The Advocate wrote “Remember, ability isn't permanent or a right. It can be taken away in an instance. Your life as you know it can be altered dramatically by a terrible accident, mental breakdown, or the even onset of diabetes."

Community Connections with Author Chris Lemig

Community Connections with Author Chris Lemig. Chris Lemig knew he was gay at twelve years old. He just didn't want  to believe it. Spurred on by intolerance, ignorance and fear, he took his  first steps into the closet and so begin twenty-three years of drinking, drugs  and attempted suicides. It's only after he wakes up one morning, beaten  and still bleeding from a hate crime, that he finally finds the courage to  come out and make a change. Renewed and refreshed, he finds sanity and  healing in the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism and without looking back, sets  off on an inspired pilgrimage to India and Nepal. The Narrow Way is the  harrowing and sometimes beautiful story of a man who lost his mind only to  find it again in a strange new religion, in a strange new place, halfway  across the world. In the Narrow Way, Chris Lemig fearlessly slams his cinematic memoir  down on your altar. He may go to India, but this ain't Eat, Pray, Love. The  Narrow Way demands that you face the great secret: you cause your own  suffering. But there's hope. Don't wait for the movie. Read this book!  Clayton Gibson, Founder of MyOutSpirit.com

If someone is venting on social media about how difficult it is to “pass” or how horrendous it is that no one takes them seriously when it comes to their transition, you see a slew of responses telling the poster that all will be well once they get their magical shot of “T”. Even if someone is just depressed in general, they are told that everything in their life will magically get better once they take hormones. It’s like the transgender community rewrote the famous Beatles song “All You Need is Love.” Tonight on Tye Spills the "T", Jayden Spann and Aryah Lester will join us to talk about their journey and share some practical advice on how we can all work together to suppot and empower each other.

Community Connections Change it for Kari

On December 1, 2013 Kari Rene Hunt was brutally murdered in front of her children ages 9, 4 and 3. She was killed by her estranged husband whom she was intending to divorce. She agreed to meet him at a local motel to leave the children with him for a short visitation. Her estranged husband, Brad Allen Dunn, apparently ambushed her in the motel room and cornered her in the restroom. During the struggle and resulting death of Kari, her oldest daughter, age 9, (name with held for privacy) attempted to dial 911 from the motel room phone. She followed instructions as taught by her mother on the way to call for help but she was never instructed that in some hotels and motels you must first dial a "9" and then 911.  Tonight, we will be talking with Kari's sister, Loni Faye Jeschke about her petition to require all hotels and motels to reserve "9" for emergency calls.  https://www.change.org/petitions/louie-gohmert-united-states-congress-require-all-hotel-and-motel-operators-to-change-the-telephone-system-that-would-require-anyone-desiring-an-outside-line-to-dial-an-8-first-freeing-up-the-number-9-for-dialing-911-emergency-numbers

    The Strong Stance: Outing Post-Transition

Outing Post-Transition: Last week, ESPN's Grantland ran an article about trans golf-club inventor Essay Anne Vanderbilt (Dr. V). The lengthy article used her trans identity to sensationalize the story; and, Dr. V committed suicide in the midst of the writer researching the story. Tonight on The Strong Stance, Melvin Whitehead will join me as we reflect on how we feel about ESPN's handling (or lack of) on the situation.  We're also going to talk about outing/disclosure and transphobia.  Yes, the gloves are off, emotions are checked at the door; and, we've got the labels on the table.  We're taking The Strong Stance. Back2Us Show: Living After Loss with Dr. Renee Sunday

"When a loved one passes away, it’s not easy to hold yourself together. It doesn’t matter if you were prepared for it or not. If you knew it was going to happen or not. If it was inevitable or an accident. The fact is that the death of a dear one is the toughest experience you’ll face in life because you know the fact that the person you loved so much will never come back to you again." Dr. Renee Sunday, M.D. Two of the hardest days of my life were August 20, 2002 when I buried my youngest daughter and January 11, 2011 when my best friend buried her wife. The books and the counselors all said that grief would come in these neatly packaged "boxes" or "stages" and honestly I was expecting them to appear in the order that I often saw them listed.  What happened was something very different and honestly I still grieve in August and January. Today, we have the opportunity to talk with Dr. Renee Sunday who wrote the book on grief (no, really she did) about how do we overcome grief and how do we support friends and loved ones during their grief.  To learn more about Dr. Renee Sunday: http://www.sundaypublishingcompany.com/ To sign the petition for Kari's Law: http://change.org/karislaw To listen to the artist Mitch Rossell that was featured today: http://www.youtube.com/user/teleplayer68 To check out his website: http://www.mitchrossell.com/%C2%A0and to purchase his music from iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/mitch-rossell/id295164942

The unemployment for transgender people is double the rate of unemployment of the general population. Forty-seven percent (47%) had experienced an adverse job outcome, such as being fired, not hired or denied a promotion."  "About 19% of transgender people have no health insurance. Ebone is the Founder and Managing Editor of Tagg Magazine; and, Josh is an archivist, an activist, and a radical educator with over 15 years’ experience working with minority communities and diversity education. In this hour, feel free to drink some "T", spill some "T", embrace the "T", and last but not least, we will learn to understand and love the "T".  That's right!!   It's Transgender Thursday with Tye and Mike.   Tonight, in respect to the recent release of the #Trans100 List, we will discuss the acknowledgement and recognition of trans* individuals and if there is space for gender non-conforming individuals to receive accolades in the mainstream. We will interview Jen Richards, of We Happy Trans and the Trans 100.   Jen Richards lives in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago and is quite happily in an asymptotic relationship to radical authenticity and in a permanent state of aporia. Jen is unabashedly proud to be a graduate of Shimer College, longtime member of the Theosophical Society in America, and an Outward Bound alum, has published articles, led workshops and presented talks on a variety of topics across the country, and relishes her work in the arts as the Managing Director of eighth blackbird and President of New Music Chicago.  She humbly requests your latitude as she figures out what the hell she is doing, and remains genuinely open to feedback.  She earnestly loves truth, beauty and goodness. She also loves you, madly.    Tune in as we open up our lives and our experiences!!

Community Connections: GBS/CIDP Walk and Roll 2014

When I was diagnoised with CIDP in 2010, my neurologist had never treated a patient with my illness.  CIDP is Chronic Inflammatory Demylinating Polyneuropathy; and, the more I researched about this illness, the more I realized that I couldn't simply be a patient being treated by my doctor I had to become my own advocate and my doctor's educator.  By chance last year, my neighbor told me about a young woman who was so intrigued by GBS/CIDP that she was organzing a walk and roll to raise money for research.  I simply had to learn more about her and why GBS/CIDP research was so dear to her heart.  Music by: Smiling Knife "Traveling Through Time" To support GBS/CIDP Research: http://www.gbs-cidp.org/walk-and-roll/ To volunteer: tammy11704@gmail.com

The Strong Stance Spotlight: Evan Higginbotham

This past weekend I was the keynote speaker at Lavender Graduation at The University of Alabama and I was reminded of how different DC and Alabama can be with regard to queer and trans* rights. We often discuss issues on The Strong Stance and statistics on how those issues affect trans* people. Tonight we are going to take a step back and look at how these issues have affected one person in particular.  The featured guest tonight is Evan Higginbotham -- a transgender gay male, from Tuscaloosa Alabama. He is a junior at the University of Alabama, studying psychology, with a minor in addictive disorders and recovery. He is the 2014 recipient of Elliott Jackson Jones memorial scholarship for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Activism on the University of Alabama campus. He is also on scholarship and an active member of the Collegiate Recovery Community at the Capstone. He has helped to start a Trans* Support Group on campus. Evan actively pursues opportunities to stand up and speak out about the Transgender community. He shared a motivational poem at Trans* Remembrance Day entitled "I Am Me."

Back2Us Show _ Mental Health Month with guest Erica Neal of Chris Kids

October 23, 2012 started out like a normal Tuesday morning for us.  Both of my children went to school but by Tuesday afternoon, only one child would come home and our life as we knew it would be forever changed.  That Tuesday afternoon started what I call our "freefall" into the adolescent mental health care system in Georgia.  The best day and the worst day of my life was when my daughter was finally diagnosed with a mental illness.  In today's show, I am going to go back to those emotions that I felt on that Tuesday afternoon and those 10 days that followed. I will talk about the critical role that the Rockdale NAMI group in my healing and we will also be joined on air with Erica Neal, Program Manager for Chris Kids "The Spot" Clubhouse.  These two community resources were critical to helping our family re-establish our life post diagnosis.   We will also feature Scott Burkholder's track today "Song for A Sister".  You can find more tracks by Scott on Soundcloud:  http://soundcloud.com/scottb55 Here is the link to the amazing studio that had a salt therapy room: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Salt-Of-The-Earth-Massage-Wellness-Studio/1443476869205437 Here is how I found my local National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Parent/Caregiver Support Group: http://www.nami.org/MSTemplate.cfm?Section=GA_Groups1&Site=NAMI_Georgia&.. Community Connections_ Understanding and Preventing Caregiver Burnout

As a parent of a daughter with Schizoaffective Disorder, a son with speech/language delays, a partner with MS, and a father in the later stages of Alzheimer's not to mention I am dealing with CIDP, I can say that I have experienced caregiver burnout.   According to WebMd, Caregiver burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion that may be accompanied by a change in attitude -- from positive and caring to negative and unconcerned. Burnout can occur when caregivers don't get the help they need, or if they try to do more than they are able -- either physically or financially. Caregivers who are "burned out" may experience fatigue, stress, anxiety, and depression. Many caregivers also feel guilty if they spend time on themselves rather than on their ill or elderly loved ones. Today, LAPC Song James and acclaimed autor Marion D. Cohen will join me to talk about the very real challenges that caregivers face but no one wants to talk about.   Marion Deutsche Cohen is the author of 23 books, prose and poetry. Besides the two well spouse memoirs, two most recent ones are CROSSING THE EQUAL SIGN, poetry about the experience of and her passion for math (from Plain View Press, TX) and PARABLES FOR A RAINY DAY (poetry chapbook from Green Fuse Press. She is well known in certain communities for her writings on bereaved parenthood, well-spouse-hood, and math. She teaches math and writing at Arcadia University (the old Beaver) in Glenside PA, where she has developed the course, Mathematics in Literature. Teko's Corner- The Myths About Androgyny.

The Myths About Androgyny With Nikki Eason and Vjay.  Androgyny is a gender identity that is distinct from the sex of the body. It is not biological nor is it synonymous with sexual behavior, nor necessarily indicative of sexual preference” (Woodhill & Samuels, 2004). It attempts to defy the traditional gender roles that men and women are assigned since birth. Sex is the inherent biological difference between men and women’s reproductive organs whereas gender is learned as social, psychological, and cultural traits associated with one sex or the other (Bond, 2011). Androgyny attempts to blur the lines between traditional gender roles and to combine masculine and feminine traits in order for a person to reach an ideal state. But this basic definition must necessarily be qualified by recognizing the diverse forms of androgyny. who embodies male and female qualities but must “split” to become creative; a “fusing androgyne,” who must merge with a male or female side of the personality to become bisexual; and a “two in one” androgyne, often represented by a couple that unites in a perfect love. Tonight, on Teko's Corner, guests Nikki Eason and Vjay will join us to share their journey and to dispel some of the myths about androgyny.

The Strong Stance: Speaking Out on Sexual Assault

In general, many people find the topic of sexual assault extremely uncomfortable to discuss, but it’s imperative that we have the conversation. Given that we don’t shy away from difficult topics on The Strong Stance, we are going to tackle this issue head on. Join us as we speak to Nicole Armstead and Christa Heilman from the Network for Victim Recovery of D.C. about the resources for survivors of sexual assault and the unique experiences of those that are trans* and gender non-conforming.

    Community Connections The Lesbian Lounge

When Sharon and I launched The Back2Us Show in March 2013, we did what any good new nerdy, geeky female brand new podcasters would do...we bought every Amazon Kindle book we could find on podcasting, spent hours studying just the right formula to make our podcast successful, enrolled in every continuing education course we could find on platform development, and of course those of you who have been with us from the beginning know that we didn't do ANY of these things but what we did find on our journey was another lesbian owned and created podcast hosted by Denise and her long time best friend Donna.  I purposely waited until after we had hit our 3 month mark of the Back2Us Show and then I began listening to their episodes.  I still remember calling Sharon and screaming "OMG I HAVE FOUND TWO MORE OF US!!"  Denise and Donna are the hosts of the longest running (now international) podcast called The Lesbian Lounge powered by MyLesbianRadio.com (http://www.mylesbianradio.com) and they were recently featured on LGBTicons (http://lgbticons.com/2014/04/02/the-lesbian-lounge-with-denise-donna/)--the hottest trending LGBT Lifestyle Blog that profiles LGBT people of significant achievement, those that have championed equality for all and individuals that have impacted positively on the lives of LGBT people.   Today, I will have the opportunity to talk one on one with Denise and discuss as we reflect on our journey of living our life passions with our best friends by our side.

    Back2Us Show_The Power of Friendship

We have all seen the quotes and memes about friendship.  Even the Mayo Clinic published an article about the impact of healthy friendships on your life"Good friends are good for your health. Friends can help you celebrate good times and provide support during bad times. Friends prevent loneliness and give you a chance to offer needed companionship, too" (Mayo Clinic, 2014).   Friendships are easy to create; but, like a relationship they take work to maintain.  Today, we are going to talk about our friendship over the past decade! We have had disagreements (like the time we bought furniture at IKEA but Sharon didn't want the boxes in her truck), we have had weeks where we were so upset with each other that we would only text or Instant Message but wouldn't speak; and, we have had times when the pain was so deep all we could do is simply sit beside each other without any words.  So pull up a chair, grab an iced chai tea latte, and get ready to dive inside our mind as we talk about not just our friendship over the past decade but also friendships that have really impacted us--both good and bad.

    Back2Us Show: Educational Advocacy 101

Arcella Trimble as our guest to help navigate the waters on Educational Advocacy 101 for Parents and Guardians as well as blogger Karen Wesley Weaver.   Karen's blog, Confessions of An Asperger's Mom (http://confessionsofanaspergersmom.blogspot.com/) has been featured on Mamapedia and is listed on the Top Mommy Blogs http://www.topmommyblogs.com%C2%A0(yes, please go vote for Confessions of An Asperger's Mom).

Hands Up Don’t Shoot. A Conversation From Ferguson

Mainstream media is dancing around issues and releasing images to frame the people of Ferguson, MO as anything but what they really are, a community that is tired of systematic and generational racism and abuse. A Gurlz Guide On-Air  sat down with Aryka Chapman as she and her good friend Tiffany Flowers returned from their trip to Ferguson, MO on a relief mission to bring aid to protesters. We talked about what she saw, how they were able to help, who the heroes were that we may never hear about and what we can all do to get involved. This is the conversation we had.

The Strong Stance: Social Work Diversity in Mental Health

Most people acknowledge that mental health issues are not handled as seriously as other health issues. There are misunderstandings, victim blaming, and the inaccurate belief that someone living with mental illness can simply 'cheer up' or get through it. What most people don't know is the diverse ways in which social workers exist in the world of mental health. There is not only a myriad of ways that social workers practice, but also a requirement for diversity and cultural competence and an ever-present need for diversity among providers. Join us as we discuss these issues and their impact on the trans* community. Tune in tonight as The Strong Stance talks with Julian Harris.  Julian is a 2nd year MSW student at Howard University where he is concentrating on mental health and trauma, and he is currently interning at the Wendt Center for Loss and Healing.  He formerly co-facilitated DCATS support groups and was a Team Leader for HIPS.  Julian is a black trans-man, living in Washington, DC.
